Children from Mudiad Meithrin Ti a Fi group in Cerrigydrudion were here collecting acorns over the weekend for Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru / Natural Resources Wales’ project,‘Acorn Antics’ and everyone had a great time.
The Acorn Antics project, which takes place each year, helps NRW plant more trees which have been grown from local seeds.
It also gives young people the opportunity to learn about, and connect with, the natural environment in Wales.
Ffion Hughes, Education Co-Ordinator, Natural Resources Wales said:
“Re-planting trees in the area they were found as acorns can reduce the chances of spreading pests and diseases that can devastate our forests in Wales.
“This project gives children the chance to get outside and learn about our woodlands and forests, while helping to protect them at the same time.”
The seed collection can be organised by education and learning groups such as, schools, Brownies, Scouts or Young Farmers.
People can also get involved by donating acorns to their local group, or inviting them to collect acorns from their land.
Collecting seeds and re-planting trees in the area where they were found as acorns means they are better suited to the climate and site. They grow more quickly and are often more resistant to diseases as well as provide a home for wildlife, and help reduce the effects of climate change.

Mae’r prosiect Campau Mes, sy’n cael ei gynnal yn flynyddol, yn helpu CNC i blannu mwy o goed sydd wedi’u hegino o hadau lleol.
Bydd y prosiect hefyd yn rhoi cyfle i bobl ifanc ddysgu a chysylltu gyda’u hamgylchedd naturiol yng Nghymru.
Dywedodd Ffion Hughes, Cydlynydd Addysg, Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru:
“Wrth ail-blannu mes yn yr ardaloedd lle casglwyd hwy rydym yn lleihau’r perygl o ledaenu afiechydon a phlâu allai niweidio coedwigoedd Cymru.
“Mae’r prosiect hwn yn darparu cyfle i blant dreulio amser yn ein coedwigoedd, gan ddysgu amdanynt a’u gwarchod ar yr un pryd.”
Gall y casglu gael ei drefnu gan grwpiau addysg a dysgu megis ysgolion, Sgowtiaid, Brownis, a’r Ffermwyr Ifanc.
Gall eraill gyfranogi trwy roddi mes i’w grŵp lleol, neu trwy eu gwahodd i gasglu ar eu tir.
Mae casglu hadau a’u hail-blannu yn yr un ardal yn golygu eu bod yn fwy addas ar gyfer yr hinsawdd a’r safle. Byddent yn tyfu’n gyflymach, ac yn aml yn gwrthsefyll afiechydon yn well yn ogystal a darparu lloches i fywyd gwyllt.
