Rhug Estate is in the starting blocks and getting ready for the British Masters Cross Country running Championships next month, when runners from across Britain will descend on the farm.

The Estate is delighted to host the event which will see individual competitors and teams running through the farm’s fields, up and down the hills and across a couple of streams! The event will be 8km for men aged 35-64 and 6km for men 65+ and all women.

Gareth Hughes, Organiser of the event, said, “Prestatyn Running Club are delighted to be hosting this event on behalf of the Welsh Masters. As founder of the Prestatyn Running Club 38 years ago I am pleased that we are able to hold this event on the Rhug Estate. This meeting goes around all the home countries in turn and has previously been held in Ruthin. In recent years the North Wales and Welsh national cross-country championships have been held at Rhug and it will be a great, but challenging, course for those taking part in the British Masters Cross Country Championships. The course is recognised as one of the best in Wales and the support we receive from everyone at Rhug makes it a pleasure to stage the championships here.”

Amongst its 120 staff Rhug Estate has a number of keen runners who use their lunch break to go for a run around the farm. Those staff affiliated with Prestatyn Running Club will be taking part in the event on Saturday, 14 March.

Lord Newborough, owner of Rhug Estate and a keen runner himself, said, “We are delighted to be able to host the British Cross Country Championships. This is exactly the sort of event we want to encourage at Rhug as it is well situated and the terrain is perfect for runners. We also have the Bistro, Takeaway and shop for supporters to visit. Members of staff who enjoy running are really looking forward to taking part.”

He continued, “Rhug is becoming increasingly popular for holding events as we are ideally situated in the centre of north Wales; we have good access from the A5, flat fields, catering facilities, a vast sheep shed providing wet weather protection and the conference facilities.”

Amongst those taking part in the British Masters Cross Country Championships are some former Olympic and Commonwealth competitors and numerous international athletes.
