Rhug Estate is honoured to have recently hosted Luke Houslay, a young photographer from Widnes battling the after-effects of brain cancer. Luke’s passion for photography and the beauty of nature led him to Rhug Estate, a place that holds many cherished memories for him and his family.

A Special Day:

Understanding Luke’s limitations due to his condition, the Rhug Estate team arranged a personalised tour for him. Head gamekeeper David Pooler took Luke on a private journey across the sprawling 12,500-acre estate, allowing him to capture stunning photographs of bison, deer, and the breathtaking scenery. This opportunity to be surrounded by nature and pursue his passion for photography brought immense joy to Luke.

Finding Comfort in Nature:

Luke’s mother, Nina, shared how visiting Rhug Estate provides a sense of solace and happiness for him. “As one of Luke’s favourite places, Rhug offers a chance to relive cherished memories from his childhood,” she said. “Being outdoors brings him a sense of peace and allows him to escape the challenges he faces daily.”

Overcoming Challenges:

Diagnosed with medulloblastoma at the young age of 15, Luke has bravely battled cancer and its lasting effects. With unwavering support from his parents, he continues to fight for normalcy. While his condition prevents him from attending college or pursuing formal photography classes, the time spent at Rhug Estate reignited his passion and boosted his confidence.

A Day Filled with Gratitude:

The day at Rhug Estate offered much more than breathtaking landscapes and wildlife encounters. Luke was treated to a delicious meal at the estate’s café, enjoying his favourite slice of cake! “He doesn’t say much,” shared Nina, “but he couldn’t stop talking about the wonderful experience. The team at Rhug Estate truly went above and beyond, and we are incredibly grateful for their kindness.”

A Lasting Connection:

Lord Newborough, owner of Rhug Estate, extends a warm welcome to Luke and his family, inviting them to return anytime. “We were honoured to showcase Rhug Estate to such a passionate supporter,” he said. “Luke’s photographs beautifully capture the spirit of our estate, and we look forward to seeing him again soon, camera in hand.”

Rhug Estate is proud to play a role in bringing joy and inspiration to those who visit. Luke’s story embodies the power of nature and the importance of creating a welcoming space for all.
