Local Choir sing to Rhug Estate Turkeys to help them taste delicious

The organic Turkey you eat from Rhug Farm, in Denbighshire, this Thanksgiving or Christmas will have been sung to by the local choir to ensure it tastes delicious.

Each year Rhug’s Turkeys listen to Classic FM on the radio every day to ensure a stress-free life but when the staff discovered they can turn the radio down themselves the local choir was brought in to sing to the birds.

Learning about where food comes from

The Rhug Estate welcomed Reception class pupils from Ysgol y Parc, Denbigh, to the farm recently. The group of over 50 children and staff were eager to learn about all the different types of animals on the farm.

Whilst visiting the Rhug, the pupils aged between four and five years old, were given a tour of the farm by Gareth Jones, Rhug Farm Manager. On their way round the farm they got to see the farm’s herd of bison, turkeys, chickens and sheep. The group got to make their own beef burgers and completed their visit in the Rhug playground.

Rhug's Sheep Wool used to make unique Bowls and Vases

For the first time ever organic wool, taken from the Rhug Estate’s flock of sheep, has been used by a local Denbighshire artist to create a range of unique and decorative vases and bowls.

Ellie Derbyshire, from Hafotty Interiors, visited Rhug back in the summer to collect wool from the farm’s flock of North Country Mules and spent time sketching the herd of bison for a separate range of artwork which is also unique to Rhug.

The Build up to Christmas for Rhug's staff

At the heart of everything that Rhug does is Lord Newborough’s passion and commitment to an organic lifestyle. He feels lucky that he has a team around him that share his beliefs and passion and recognise the importance of sustainable farming.

The Sales team are based in the Estate Office and includes: Joan Redmond, Louise McNutt, Sarah Cowell and Charlotte Holliday.

We would like to introduce you to Louise. Louise McNutt has worked at Rhug since 2009 in the sales team.

The build up to Christmas is definitely the busiest time for Louise as she manages the sale of Rhug's Award winning Turkeys and Geese.

Louise says, "We actually start preparing for the Christmas campaign in the spring and throughout the summer. The orders usually start trickling in around September and things get busier and busier from then on. By December, we’re flat out dealing with customer enquiries, collating the order to ensure everything is spot on for the all-important Christmas deliveries."

Having worked for Rhug for almost 10 years Louise says that she has been speaking to some of Rhug's deli customers twice a week for nearly ten years and enjoys the snippets of gossip or silly in jokes that develop.

Louise said, "Maintaining those relationships is really enjoyable. It’s the same with lots of our Turkey and Goose customers. Many of them prefer to call with their order every year rather than just ordering it online as it is part of their Christmas tradition. There are some lovely characters that I look forward to speaking to and some that throw in a strange request to keep us on our toes."

Before heading to work in the morning Louise enjoys joining other crazy members of staff for a swim in Llyn Tegid. She is also a trained masseuse and reflexologist and works from home two nights a week specialising in muscular pain relief, stress relief and relaxation techniques.

If you would like to speak to Louise directly to order your Christmas Turkey or Goose over the phone she would love to hear from you. You can telephone: 01490 413000 during office hours.

You can also visit our Christmas Online Shop: and Louise will do all she can so your order gets to you in time for the most important meal of the year.
